Sumner Backyard Built for Day and Night Enjoyment

Most backyards in the Pacific Northwest get used maybe four months out of the year. That's a lot of wasted space. This Sumner property was a perfect example - great bones, beautiful lot, but nothing pulling it together into a space people actually want to spend time in. That's exactly what we set out to fix.

The hardscape work here is the backbone of the whole design. We installed a raised paver patio platform underneath a timber-frame pergola, with a large-format flagstone approach leading up to it. The two surfaces play off each other well - the irregular natural stone softens the clean lines of the paver deck. It's the kind of detail that makes a space feel intentional rather than pieced together.

From there, it was about layering in the landscaping to frame everything. Dark mulch beds curve around the patio area with boulders, ornamental grasses, and low-growing shrubs placed to give structure without overcomplicating things. The Japanese maple on the right side of the space is a standout feature on its own - but it really comes alive once the sun goes down.

That's where the lighting does the heavy lifting. Bollard path lights line the stamped concrete walkway leading to the pergola, while uplights punch into the trees overhead. The result is a space that looks completely different at night - dramatic, warm, and genuinely usable well into the evening. A hot tub tucked under the pergola with privacy curtains ties it all together.

This is what we mean when we talk about building an outdoor space that works year-round. It's not just about how it looks on a sunny afternoon. It's about whether you'd actually want to be out there on a cool evening in October. This one passes that test easily.
